Filter press is a separation process, specially for solid/liquid separation using the pressure drive, provided by a slurry pump (centrifugal pump or positive disposal pump). Filterpress can be a fixed volume (chamber Filter press) or variable volume (membrane Filter press). Filtration with filterpress is a batch operation, which simply means that the operation must be stopped to discharge the filtercake before the next batch can be started

The major component of filterpress is skeleton that supports filter press plates, filter press plates and hydraulic packing jack or manual packing system. design of filter press is on the base of solid behavior in slurry and cake of filter press, filtrate flux needed and filtration time. Filter press plates support filter medium that can be filterpress sheets or filter cloths
Generally, the slurry needed to be dewatered is injected into the center of the press ore edge of filterpress and fill up each chamber separately. The filling time should be as quick as possible in order to avoid cake formation in the first chamber before filling up the last chamber. While the chambers are being filled up, the pressure inside the system will increase due to the formation of thick sludge (filter press cake formation) then, the liquid in the cake is filtered out through the filter cloths by adding streams of compressed air or water. Because of water viscosity using of pressurized water require more time to pass into the chamber compared to pressurized air, however this method is much more cost efficient
